Description*

This document makes recommendations to museums that have taken up the Sustainable Development Goals, as a blueprint to address climate change and other sustainability issues. It can be accessed through the website of Klimahaus Bremerhaven, a museum providing knowledge and experience on the topics of climate, climate change and weather.

The document was presented during the international symposium "How to...? From climate knowledge to climate action” held at Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost on 24th and 25th September 2020. The background was a 10-point program created by Henry McGhie (Curating Tomorrow) based on a survey of museum professionals working on climate change and combined with the UNFCCC process. On the one hand, the declaration is intended to motivate museums from all areas to deal with the climate crisis. On the other hand, it is an appeal to political actors to support museums in this important task.

Some of the contents of the document are:

  • Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
  • Ten key lessons learnt by museums during 2016-19
  • The need for support from governments, government agencies and funders
