Description*

This tutorial explores citizen science’s potential to bridge the research gap in analyzing the impact of armed conflicts on human health and environment. It was hosted by the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) on its official Youtube channel.

The tutorial was conducted as part of the third ECSA. Conference 2020 organized virtually from Trieste (Italy). It discussed a selection of case studies where civilian science approaches have been leveraged to study environmental change in conflict zones. ECSA is a non-profit association set up to encourage the growth of the Citizen Science movement in Europe in order to enhance the participation of the general public in scientific processes. It initiates and supports citizen science projects as well as performing research on citizen science.

Some of the case studies discussed are:

  • Citizen science for biodiversity in Palestine
  • Monitoring water-quality in post-conflict regions of Colombia
  • Environmental protection in Somalia
