Description*

This third and final chapter of the conflict series explores how to bring conflicts to peace. It is conducted by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The course provides an introduction to conflict studies and more advanced courses in conflictology. The main goal of the course is to equip participants with the basic knowledge to then pursue more advanced courses in conflictology, notably UNITAR’s Master degree in Conflict, Peace and Security.

The material is presented in an interactive visual and text format with web-based reference resources. Multiple choice quizzes at the end of each lesson serve a dual function of assessing and evaluating the students’ understanding and retention and provide a further didactic function by reviewing the content.

This chapter gives the learners a basic understanding of theories about conflict resolution, and a set of methods to accomplish this.

The learning outcomes of this course include:

  • Understanding the process from conflict to peace
  • Illustrating the four main theories of transition from conflict to peace
  • Describing the three main methods used for addressing violent conflict: negotiation, mediation and humanitarian negotiation
  • UN conflict resolution
