Description*

This publication discusses the stepwise implementation plan of the self-assessment tool, in addition to foundation concepts and case examples. It can be accessed at the website of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM).

The toolkit is designed to aid institutions engaged in restoring heritage projects in conflict areas globally. The first part of the publication describes four inter-related steps of the tool that can be used to define conflict dynamics, identify risks, and analyze the peacebuilding capacity of the heritage project. The second part elaborates on basic concepts of heritage recovery such as conflict analysis and risk management. The summaries of the heritage projects assessed by this tool are discussed in part three of the book.

ICCROM is an intergovernmental organization created in the aftermath of the Second World War in response to the widespread destruction and the urgent need to reconstruct cultural property. Over the years, ICCROM has followed an interdisciplinary approach to conservation by engaging the expertise of scientists, conservators, restorers, archaeologists, art historians, curators, architects, engineers and city planners. Regular courses and workshops have expanded in focus, now including topics such as conservation of museums, historic structures in stone, brick, wood or earthen architecture, archaeological sites, historic urban areas and cultural landscapes.

Some of the heritage projects assessed using the tool are:

  • Old City of Homs, Syria
  • Revolution of Dignity Museum, Ukraine
  • City of Goražde, Bosnia and Herzegovina
